Mikana’s
historical roots
The History of Mikana and its Founders
Mélanie Lumsden and Widia Larivière met in 2007 at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), while both were involved with the Cercle des Premières Nations. Each born of an Indigenous and a non-indigenous parent, they grew up observing the persistent gap between the Indigenous and non-indigenous worlds. Driven by their desire to build bridges between these worlds, they began collaborating on projects aimed at bringing these two realities closer together.

Engagements in Favour of the Indigenous Cause
by speaking at various events to raise awareness of Indigenous realities, or through actions in favour of social change, they have worked for a more just and inclusive society.

A Turning Point with Social Entrepreneurship
A decisive turning point for the two cofounders was their participation in a social entrepreneurship program offered by l’Esplanade. Selected by this incubator for entrepreneurs driven by social impact, they joined the business start-up cohort entitled “À go, on change le monde!”. This opportunity enabled them to structure and realize their vision for sustainable social change.

The Birth of Mikana
At the same time, Widia and Mélanie collaborated on the production of an awareness-raising video entitled “Où sont tes plumes?”, in partnership with Wapikoni mobile.
This experience was instrumental in the launch of Mikana, their organization, founded in 2015. Mikana is the fruit of several years of joint reflection and commitment to raising public awareness of the realities of Indigenous Peoples.
