The Decolonial Toolbox is the result of a multi-year collaboration between Concordia University’s Office of Community Engagement, Mikana and the Montreal Indigenous Community NETWORK. The first tool in the Decolonial Toolbox offers the public an educational pathway on the historical and contemporary realities of indigenous peoples.
The pathway brings together carefully curated resources, produced by Indigenous people or organizations, that are accessible and promote indigenous expertise.
The themes covered in the Educational Pathway provide foundational knowledge of terminology, territory and colonial history. Upcoming levels will explore indigenous resistance and resurgence, anti-racism, the concept of allies and the plurality of Nations.
Why a self-education course?
To respond to the overwhelming demand from the public, the Educational Pathway enables you to learn about the realities of Indigenous peoples, thus easing the educational burden that falls on Indigenous organizations and individuals. It is important to foster a more independent learning process in order to transfer responsibility to the learners.
The aim is to provide resources, stimulate reflection, and help readers understand the complexity of decolonization and integrate this change into their daily lives. These stepping stones will guide readers on a journey towards decolonization and a meaningful alliance between the Peoples.
Our aim is to enable users to take their personal reflections beyond the shared content.
How do I use this course?
Throughout the self-educational pathway, users will be able to listen, view and read the resources offered in order to spark their reflection. Depending on their learning process, they will have access to over 22 hours of content.
Available as a PDF document, the Educational Pathway is free and accessible online. Simply download the tool onto your computer, smartphone or tablet, then follow the themes. Each theme has resources that are clearly described and hyperlinked. By clicking on the resource title, users will be directed to the appropriate page.
In a group :
The Educational Pathway can be used to raise awareness among certain groups wishing to broaden their horizons with regard to the realities of Indigenous people. For example, this tool can be useful in the workplace, when training staff or new employees. Group discussions and sharing are encouraged as a way to enrich this experience. Any group wishing to form a learning circle can therefore benefit from this course, whether organized with friends or family.
Individually:
The Educational Pathway can also be used to support a person’s personal development and self-reflection process. This tool gives you the opportunity to review your perspectives and knowledge, and to start addressing your own unconscious biases and social practices. The Pathway allows users to learn at their own pace, while giving them the opportunity to become aware of the plurality of indigenous experiences, identities and voices.
