The “You don’t look Indigenous” and other prejudices booklet, published in March 2018 by Mikana, aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the history, cultures and contemporary realities of the Indigenous peoples of Quebec and Canada.
It was written in collaboration by Widia Larivière and Mélanie Lumsden of Mikana, while the project management and graphic design were handled by Amnistie internationale Canada francophone. It offers a rich and accessible introduction to the different Indigenous nations, their historical contribution and their current situation. It tackles various themes such as territories, languages, traditions, and struggles for recognition of rights, while unwinding the biases we may have about these groups. The booklet invites reflection on relations between Indigenous and non-indigenous, encouraging respectful and informed dialogue.
An invaluable tool for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of Indigenous peoples and their living heritage. Many thanks to Gilles Rivet for editing and to Meky Ottawa for illustration. The members of the Rive-Sud group, who initiated the project, also deserve recognition for their significant contribution.
